I was getting a reply ready actually - your last post was posted after I started writing my last post - so I started writing a reply to your post now after and now refreshing the page I see your new post asking for me to reply to your last post that you just posted....

So anyway . I just did some quick research on this, it is not something I've ever seen before - but I don't usually install games with keyloggers and registry hacks.

There is no SP2 for Windows 7 - SP1 was only announced a couple of weeks ago and still isn't out.

One post I found about this sort of thing is here: Link. It talks about it being some kind of registry hack - and it has a couple of links to check for more info on it.

Right now though, I can tell you for sure it's a fake - I'd run some virus/spyware scans right away to try to get rid of whatever you let on there - but I (or you) will have to do more reading to find out if that indicates your system is still compromised or if it is a side effect of some game hack that makes the game think it is running on another system or something...

PJPeter

P.S. And then you posted another reply before I could reply to the reply of the reply! - Come on man patience is a virtue! . Sure you can make one extra reply just incase I missed that post in between (which I didn't) - but I'll get an e-mail with every reply anyway so there's no need to make two replies like that in a row - I only see them after the fact anyway

I'll post this separately to make sure you see it (since it's already been 6 whole minutes since my last message ):

What are the chances that thavmym downloaded and installed STALKER Call of Pripyat (Russian version) and used the "CSDVersion = 200 reg hack" to bypass the Starforce copy protection?

Reference: Link

Sound familiar?

If that's all the crack did then now you know what it changed - and in that same message it tells how to change it back if you want to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Windows]

CSDVersion

000 = no SP
100 = SP1
200 = SP2
300 = SP3
etc

So if that's all it did then you're fine - but it may interfere with future Windows updates and so on, so you should change it back when you're done the game. However, I would still run AntiVirus and Anti-Spyware full scans on your system just incase.

Hey techno_guy,

I don't know of a way to under volt the i7 CPU successfully unfortunately. You can reduce the clock multiplier by using Power4Gear to change the Min/Max Processor speeds, but aside from the little boost from the Extreme Turbo switch to overclock the CPU, there is no other way to change the power levels of the CPU.

I will try to add it if there ever is found a way (and if you learn of one, please do let me know) but currently after reading dozens of webpages and forums, there is no way to undervolt an i7 CPU.

Concerning the warmth of the palm rest:
It's cool to the touch when using Battery Saving mode, though it does get warm with High Performance Mode and quite hot with Extreme Turbo+GPU Overclock underload.

You can see the thermal images a couple of pages back, and you can also note what I said in my a couple of posts ago as well:

When I play Mass Effect I've noticed that my

palm rest gets quite warm (42*C measured with my new IR thermometer). I do have a small USB fly-fan that I picked up for $2 last year that I now have attached to the top of the screen blowing cool air at that spot and it really helps, gets it back down to around 32*C instead. So I like the idea of getting more air down there - and [the sub-assembly case mod] may also help, since the way it is setup by default it gets lots of air from under the keyboard (from what I've read anyway) and therefore if the lid is closed it can overheat very easily. This though adds the air below as a much greater vector, and could definitely help with that.

PJPeter

P.S. No problem maverick - happy to help . Please do use the 'Edit Message' option if you want to add something to a post when no one else has replied though, so the thread doesn't get too cluttered - thanks .

Hello there, how's the 197.16 doing. Has anyone tried it yet ?

I haven't touch anything to my NVDIA, change driver, overclock, benchmark.
Can you give me link to download the overclock application, how to change driver ?
And what i suppose to do with my GPU first to increase the performance ?

Hey vanez,

Copying and pasting from my first reply to you:

The overclock #s refer to the GPU Clock/Memory Clock/Processor Clock in that order (which is also the order they are displayed in the Overclocking application). The GPU (Nvidia) Overclocking app is: Nvidia System Tools 6.05. You can use that to overclock the GPU.

I've been using 197.16 for the past week with no problems at all. To upgrade the driver, just install it - done . You can also uninstall the old one first if you want to be thorough.

The GPU is usually set so it goes to maximum stock performance when needed - you can check the clocks with CPU-Z or GPU-Z or some other similar app to see what they are - as well as the Nvidia System Tools Performance/Overclocking app I mentioned just above.

Hope that answers your question,

PJPeter

One thing I'll add, every so often I would end up some kind of Chinese characters coming up instead of the English I wanted when using EditPad, Firefox and various other Windows 7 apps. I wasn't sure what was going on, and I found I had to shut down the app to fix it (otherwise I would just get those characters). It was really getting quite annoying.

Then I realized it must be because of Language settings - and sure enough, I checked the Language Bar (activated via Language/Region Options) and it was set to change to Chinese Traditional/Taiwanese if I hit CTRL+Space and set to go to other Asian Punctuation/Letters for any number of other key combinations.

These features are completely useless to me as I don't know any of those characters in the slightest and I never chose to install them. To solve this, I completely removed those Keyboard settings - two clicks on delete and it was solved.

I think it was there because ASUS is a Taiwanese company - I never reinstalled Windows 7 and I'm still using the OEM install (I had originally planned to install Windows 7 Professional to use IIS, but it works in Home Premium no problem at all).  So they probably included those settings by default and I'd triggered them accidentally (Since my FN and CTRL keys were switched on my old laptop the ASUS Z69JS).

So if you've been noticing this behaviour at all, that's the fix.

Hope everyone is enjoying their G51Jx's - I certainly am .

Yep - that's what matters - it looks solid with the reinforcement, and if it works it's perfect .

Not only should your palm rest on the left side be cooler (see if you can confirm how much if you remember) - but the whole system should last longer because of the lower temps and you can overclock it more without as much overheating - win-win .

Does it seem quieter at all than before? With the lower temps the fan should start up less, but curious if the more open design lets more noise out when it does get going.

One question though, do you know how much it was without the Antec Cooler before and now?

Glad to hear you got it delivered so soon - thought it would be much later - if the RAM works too (as it should) then you've got an even better system definitely .

Hi Peter, I'm brand new to your website, but want to thank you for making information about this laptop available to everyone.  I'm not much of a gamer, but I do a lot of post-processing of photos using Adobe Photoshop CS, and I do a fair amount of video processing as well.  After looking into many laptops on the internet, I found that this Asus G51Jx is probably the nicest machine for the money.  However, do you feel that it would be overkill for my needs?  I've also not been able to get a good answer whether there is any discernible difference between the G51Jx-A1 and the G51Jx-X5.  Would you know what the difference is?

Much thanks,
Monty

Hi Peter,
Answering your questions have to say that I try to make most of this baby by upgrading parts which allow it run faster & smoothly.
As I sold my PC ( really regreting - was a top end mashine but money needed) all my attention now to this baby as I do a lot of work & of course gaming.
To be honest I can't see any difference - still quiet as it was before,when gaming -  ANTEC connected all the time so can only hear its blowing.Max temperature  ever reach by this baby was +82C whilst racing for about 2,5 hours (was worrying but as I red on ASUS forums GTX260m & GTX 280m do up to +96C).After I changed to my DIY spare CPU Door - most what it does +72C ( all thouse tem-es are GPU's, CPU's normaly 10-12C lower) with ANTEC 200 Cooler.I never paid attention to temperatures without ANTEC as it always been low so can't tell you that.
Now I'm thinking to get ZALMAN 2000 which is actually blowing into laptop compare to ANTEC which is sucking off the laptop's bottom. So what I'm trying to say that I'm expecting fZALMAN will blow that cool flow into that hole and as it's very good stream - it will go trough and hopefully will do job much better, what do you think?
Yeah, today received RAM & got it installed

Haven't tested yet but don't think it will be a big difference but as I mentioned early I'm trying to make most out of this baby - 8Gb not 16 but still perfect.
So have a look please....
Thanks man

Hey Nokuma,

Sorry to say it, but I can't see another either. I can't get anything conclusive from the Device Manager, the Mini port is showing up as a regular PCI Express. At this point, I think the one Wifi Mini PCI-E is the only hardware slot we've got - but I'd love it if someone can prove me wrong.

Hey Monty,

Welcome to the forum and you're welcome . I have to agree with you that for cost for top level performance this laptop is just about the apex on the market today. So far from what I've read the X5 looks like it has a redesigned lid, and wrist-rests. You can see this here:
(G51JX-X5 Inside)

(G51JX-X5 Lid)

It seems to have all the 4 ram slots (unlike the X3) and all the other specs are the same (According to Amazon/BHP anyway) - but they have made mistakes in the past. No idea if it comes with the free Razer Mouse and Backpack - it isn't mentioned so it wouldn't be safe to assume it. I can only tell you what I know after 2 months working with the A1 though - the X5 is still mostly an unknown quantity my perspective from what I've seen and read about so far.

As for it being overkill, I mean it's up to you, but I want to be able to do work on it for a few years and the best way to guarantee that (aside from being careful with it/getting an extended warranty) is to make sure it's as future proofed as possible now. With the Quadcore processor and slot, Express Card slot for potential USB3.0 upgrades, 4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, potentially upgradable GPU via the ASUS MXM Slot (and advanced GTS360M card to start with), Full HD screen - the only technology it's lacking that I can see is 3D Display - and only because the current tech requires a 120Hz refresh rate or higher to do this smoothly. I'm more than willing to trade that for the FHD though - imho it's the perfect balance of performance, usability for work, portability and price. I can't say that it 100% is the system for you, but for me I'm very happy with it and I hope to stay that way for a long time .

Hey Maverick,

The RAM looks good . Bumps your Mem score up to 7.5 and will hopefully come in handy at some point (maybe using a RAM Disk or some other similar tech) - for now 8GB is plenty imho.

If the coolers work as you describe, then having it so the laptop is getting a stream of cool air into the fan intake rather than trying to suck from a vacuum - it could definitely help. The theory is sound, but I can't say which way it will go in practice, it really depends how strong each are and how well the steams line up. It could be if the ambient temps are high and the air is still warm when it gets to the fan intake then the vacuum - I don't know - it would just be pulling hot air through the sides (including the hot air outtake) and just end up with hot/warm air there. So it could certainly be worth a try .

It'd be curious to try a test without the Antec so you can compare if it is helping much at all, that could help you get more info before getting the Zalman, but it's not essential.

Hope that helps all ,

PJPeter
