Title: G51Jx has Power Using Tip N3

ASUS-G51Jx-A1 and Kensington-Universal120WAC/DCPowerAdapter

Compatibility Rating: 75%

More Info: Awesome! I had this adapter for my Z96JS and I just tested it with the G51Jx and it works. Having the 120W for my 90W Z96JS was a little bit overkill, but 120W is the requirement for the G51Jx .

It uses the same tip as the Z96JS: N3

As an aside, every laptop I've bought (the first being in 2003) has used the same tip - I did not plan this, but it makes me very happy that I bought a spare of these 120W Kensington Power Adapters when they were on clearance at a local outlet for $20 last year .

I will run a full power 3DMark06, Prime and Vantage Tests to confirm the adapter gives all the power the Jx can want with no throttling issues - so far so good .

Just FYI, as a secondary option, you can remove the battery and the laptop will require less power as it will not try to charge or top up the battery. This will often allows lower wattage portable PowerPacks/PowerPlugs to run laptops with higher requirements.

For convenience, here is a link to my Review of the G51Jx

As an update,

When using the Kensington Universal 120W adapter, I found that the scores on 3DMark06 would drop noticeably in terms of GPU speed.

Running the tests while charging the battery (at about 25%) and with Wifi on and connected and Extreme Turbo enabled I found that the scores dropped to 9230. Then when I re-ran the same test with the ASUS 120W PSU the result was 9603. The CPU score was identical - but the SM3 score dropped 100 points  and the SM2 score dropped 250.

So it appears that there was some throttling going on - and it got worse as time went on - to 8785  and then 8763 - my theory was that it was taking more juice to charge the battery and that was throttling the GPU even more. When I removed the battery and set the screen brightness to lowest, the scores went up to 9095. With Wifi disabled and Turbo Disabled the score improved to 9241 (the CPU score was down by 100, but the GPU scores were up significantly). When I changed to the ASUS 120W PSU the score once again jumped to 9500.

There may have been some effects in the background from Windows downloading updates, so I will run a few more tests. However, it seems that the GPU is being throttled with the 120W Kengington Travel Power Adapter. 120W is the strict limit on the Travel Adapter so that could be why - I will run some more tests and see what I come up with.

So the laptop will boot, charge and run without a problem with the Kensington 120W Travel Adapter - it just doesn't seem to have the power to let the GPU go to full force when under stress.

Based on other tests I'm pretty sure that my 120W Kensington Universal Power Adapter does not actually provide 120W to this notebook, but rather 90W since the Adapter determines output voltage based on the N3 tip and the tip that fits the G51Jx was the same as my Z96JS and G732 which were both 90W laptops (4.74 @ 19V). The performance matches that found with the 90W Adapter.
